There can be no afterlife because it is something that human beings made up in an effort to avoid dealing with death in an intellectually honest and emotionally mature way. Believing that Santa Claus will bring me presents if I'm good is just as absurd as believing that God will reward me with life after death if I'm good. It's an unproven claim, and it doesn't need to be disproven to be invalid.

It doesn't matter what people think. If you choose not to believe nobody is going to make you change your mind anyway. However the way you posed the question I feel you are thinking about it and you are not 100% sure if there is an afterlife or not.
If you want proof ask yourself with an open mind who or what controls the seasons of the year. The growth of nature, the miracle of life. What's the point of living an average of 70 years on this earth only to rot under the ground for eternity. I could go on but I'm sure you heard those arguments many times before.
I suppose I could turn the question around and ask what proof do you have that there is no afterlife? I think my argument is better, do you not agree? Of course you don't. Another gift we have. Free will!
If you are still not sure all I can say is err on the side of caution.
Carpe Diem.

Well, I am a sceptic, and do not believe in an afterlife, but I think your question is a bit extreme. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, so the fact that there is no proof does not automatically preclude an afterlife. But for me, it makes the possibility vanishingly small. We understand the physics and chemistry of life pretty well now, and there is nothing to suggest that there is anything that survives, or can survive, the termination of biological life. Such a preposition would require, as Carl Sagan put it, extraordinary evidence.
But we are all going to find out, aren't we, so why worry about the issue?

I think if you can answer "Who am I" (which: the body, the spirit, the soul, the personality, the memories) then after the death of the body (which deteriorates and dissolves with other matter/energy) what are the candidates that can continue to live? Is there a 'you' without the body? If the 'you' goes to other bodies like some religions believe, then there is a 'youness' or a 'meness' that is apart from the body? Can you imagine your body being different but you being the same? Such questions lead to further questions. If we restrict to the world of what has been clearly proved, then we haven't heard from those who die (and those reports from the mediums are questionable) and death seems to be a one way street.
Of course, if just one person gets reincarnated or comes back alive after death with the same body/memories, it would answer that there is afterlife. That person can reveal us the mystery of what is death, how it is like to undergo death experience, what happens after death, what happened to all those who died and various related questions. Our worldview would not be the same after. Unfortunately, it never happened. Maybe we can ask all these questions who claim to be reincarnations of other people. Particularly in the eastern world.

Conversely, if there is no proof then we can't prove there ISN'T one. It's a personal thing, there is not proof so is all down to personal belief. The thought of an afterlife is comforting as it gives hope and less fear to dying

To be completely honest with you, it is much wiser to live like theres no tomorrow. It's much wiser to live your life like it is the one and only life you will ever have. Maybe there is an afterlife, but if there isn't, you wasted your one and only life thinking about the next. So, if there is an afterlife, then it would be 'after' this life and most people will get there and wonder: "Is their another life after this one???" wtf, it is obviously not as important as humans has made it. This life right here and now is what is important. Santa will still bring you presents even if you were a naughty girl, why? Because Santa doesn't exist and your presents comes from elsewhere....

There is no proof that God will let you draw your next breath. Does that mean that you don't believe that you will. Afterlife is not based on proof. It is based on faith.
Death is inevitable. The thief on the cross knew when his would occur, but we can not predict our own. After his death, the crucified criminal went to live in paradise with Jesus. Some of us will also live eternally in God's presence. But others will experience everlasting torment, forever separated from Him.
If we receive Jesus as our Savior, our penalty for sin is paid. We are adopted into God's family, and Heaven is our eternal home. If we reject Jesus, we remain alienated from the Lord and under condemnation for our sin. We are destined to experience eternal judgment. God won't accept any of man's excuses because there is no acceptable defense for unbelief. (Acts 4:12)
Become part of God's family today. Acknowledge your sinfulness, and express your faith in these words:
"God, I have sinned against You. (Romans 3:23) I've followed my own way and refused to give You the right to rule in my life. (Romans 3:10-12) I recognize I am separated from You and cannot rescue myself. I do believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son. I accept the truth of the Scriptures? that His death on the cross paid my sin-debt in full. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) And I ask You to forgive me of my sins. (1 John 1:9) By faith, I receive You, Lord Jesus, as my personal Savior from this moment on."
If you just spoke those words to God, then, like the thief on the cross, you have received salvation? a gift of God's grace. The heavenly Father welcomes every person who comes to Him through His Son, regardless of background, age, or current situation. Through Jesus, the right to enter paradise is yours!

Most things of real value cannot be proved.
You can prove sex, but not love
You cannot prove honesty, fidelity, compassion. (They are too deep for 'proof')
How can you prove a vistory before its won
How can you prove a man who leads to be a leader worth the following
unless you follow to the death...
and out beyond mere death (Studdert Kennedy)
