He had a big ego and got allot of people killed by invading most of those islands when all he had to do was a Naval blockade and air cover then starve them out, the only one we really needed was Iwo Jima because of the air strikes against mainland Japan Many of his men in the Philippine area hated him because he left them saying he shall return and he went out on a submarine and the men went on the Bataan death march

His father was Civil War hero and recipient of the Medal of Honor, General Arthur MacArthur. He commanded troops in the Philippines during the insurrection. Douglas MacArthur would also serve in the Philippines as a Lieutenant right out of West Point.
During World War One Douglas MacArthur commanded the famous 45th (Rainbow) Division. He lead attacks from the front without carrying a weapon or gas mask. During one German bombardment he shared a foxhole with George S. Patton.
After World War One he became Commandant of West Point and was instrumental in making Army football nationally renown.(there was a time when Army dominated collegic football). During the 1930's MacArthur commanded the Military District of Washington and crushed the "Bonus marchers."
After his retirement he returned to the Philippines as military adviser to the Filipino President. As World War 2 approached President Roosevelt recalled MacArthur to active duty and placed him in charge of all forces in the Philippines.
After Pearl Harbor the Japanese invaded the Philippines and drove the American-Filipino forces to southern Luzon and Corregidor Island.
FDR ordered him off Corregidor and to Australia. Additionally he was given the Medal of Honor.
MacArthur commanded American and Allied forces in the Central pacific culminating in the liberation of the Philippines.
Incidentally, he opposed the use of the Atom bomb on Japan.

Upon japanese surrender he commanded the Allied occupation governemtn and helped draft the japanese constitution which provided sufferage for women, abolished the fuedal system and prohibited the japanese military from operating beyond Japan.

I heard a story that he never carried a weapon , he would stand on the battlefield directing his troops with only a swagger stick. He said it inspired more confidence in his men to see him standing there like that," besides he didn't a gun, that's what the soldiers are for"...........I believe he was the army's youngest major general,.............Him and his father are the only father-son Medal of Honor winners...........his father was also a general.................that's all I can think of at the moment

he led the assualt on the WW! bounus army in washigton dc and killed many US veterns.look it up he was in charge and the vets were cold and hungry and asking for the money promised them after WW1 , so hoover tells mac arthur to BURN THEM OUT -thanks alot mr .veteren -we got a deal for you! LOL . he disobeyed direct orders from truman and got fired for doing so ,also.
