Interesting question. Actually, about three-quarters of households give to charity in the U.S., so it's higher than you think. There's evidence to suggest that people who volunteer are more likely to give, so it could be that people who don't give are less involved in their communities and less caring about others. Poor people give a higher percentage of their income to charity than rich people, and conservatives give slightly more than liberals even when you eliminate money donated to churches.
For some people, I think it's that they don't care, for others that they've got too many of their own problems, for still others I think that they prefer to insulate themselves from need -- they don't have to be grateful for what they have if they refuse to acknowledge that some people have it hard. If, after all, you can say, "What happens to other people is their own fault" then you can pretend that what you have is through your own goodness or intelligence and not some accident of the universe that blessed you beyond what you deserve.

I think a lot of people won't donate because they don't see where the money actually goes. I know I never donated because I see all the things on the news about NON for profits stealing money that was for the charity but they spent it on other things. I still will not give unless I see where the money goes and what it is really used for. It is just too easy to start up a Non For Profit and no one regulates it.

i could ought to assert the biggest reason that i does no longer donate to charity could be from the occasion I even have considered of what occurs once you're too beneficiant. My mom in regulation is comfortably off and has given money to three charities and then the worry starts. some charities sell their documents bases to different charities to make further money and then they start to pester you and the ball basically keeps rolling. the unique charity is under no circumstances satisfied with what you supply them and keeps inquiring for greater and then all of the others initiate asking, until you mail field and make contact with are full of people inquiring for money. They actual start to stalk you so as that's why i does no longer supply to charity as they are grasping and basically shop asking.

I dont believe that people arent asked to donate to charity. In fact, we are asked all too often. The citizens of the United States give more to charity freely than any other country. But when people get through perversing the system and lying about where the funds are going, then it sort of turns people off to giving. Many people feel like they've given enough to charity or they themselves should get some money for their own personal charity. For example, I definitely need money for college, my parents make to much for me to be considered a person who is in "need" and they make not enough for me to go to school out of the pocket. Am I not a charity case?technically at least?

Not sure what any "pole"(sic) said.
Most people that don't are selfish and don't believe in helping others, but when they want help, guess what thier attitude is.
Also, like politics and religion, charities have been given a bad rap by the irresponsible actions of some. Just recently, a woman who worked for the Rockefeller Foundation, (not exactly a "charity"), was convicted of embezzling over $400,000 US from the fund.

I only donate to the American Red Cross and Girl Scouts. Most people do not have the money to donate often but I chose these to because I have seen what the American Red Cross does with thier money and other charities never show results. And I can not resist those Girl scout cookies

I don't think people realize how important the money is when it comes to charity until someone in there family needs from 1.I also think what u said that until someone is asked to donate they usually don't go out of there way to do it but coming to them n asking they most likely would.Honestly when it comes to me if someone comes to my door and I look into what there asking for to make sure it's legit I will donate no prob but I don't go out of my way to.I have never thought of it but now u r making me wonder why ?Anyway have a wonderful wk.

I think a lot of people don't give to Charity is because things are so expensive now a days that they feel that they cant afford to give a little. People are asked all the time and they turn it down almost everytime there are asked. People aren't as giving as they used to be.

I do not donate to most organizations because I only donate to Catholic organizations that are animal cruelty-free. They are generally smaller and I can figure out where exactly my money is going. Instead of donating to the animal killing AHA to pay for someone to call me and ask for more money.
That is why I do not appreciate the bad looks those bell ringers give around Christmas time. We do not all have the same goals for the world and I'd appreciate if animals not be tortured in the process of trying to help humans and I don't wish to donate to help Atheists.

Its tough to donate to others when gas prices are going up, rent is as well, taxes, etc. People tend to give more during catastrophes like Hurricane Katrina or when the economy is good or when someone pulls their heart strings -- like a news item about finding 6 abandoned and abused puppies in 2 feet of snow.
