I'm going to buy an HDTV but I dont want to pay extra for the HD package from my cable company, if, lets say, the superbowl is transmitted on HD, can I still see it on HD without the extra HD service? I dont know if my question is confusing, I just dont want to pay extra for channels I wont be watching. Any thoughts?

If you mean transmitted as "broadcast over the air " and being able to pick up the signal via TV antenna then a qualified YES. Your HDTV must have an ATSC tuner. This will enable it to receive "over the air" broadcasts in HD.
I have a panasonic 42" plasma HDTV which has the ATSC tuner. I hooked up an inexpensive UHF antenna to it and have been able to see FOX and CBS's playoff games in HD. I am also able to receive the PBS HD signal as well as the local NBC HD station as well.
I would go to the antennaweb site to see if you can receive HD signals from your location.

If you are going to buy an HDTV but you don't want a High Definition signal going to it from some HD source, then I would suggest buying a digital pure flat TV. The picture will be pretty good. If you don't have a signal that is HD, the price you pay is too much, and the picture will be grainy on your HDTV. It's your choice. Once you have HD, you'd never go back.

You can view analog stations on a HD set, however you would really be missing the ultra fine quality of the HD pictures. If you don't have a cable box make sure the plasma/lcd, etc. has a tuner card built on board (where you typically plug coaxial cable in). You may be better off waiting until more channels are available in HD. The date that we are all waiting for is Feb. 2009, where all stations are required to be broadcasting in digital.

all you need is an HD antennae [you know rabbit ears] - there like 30 bucks and you can probably get it at the same place as the tv. the picture will still be in hd [ps this goes for all hd broadcasts on the network channels - so every game on fox or cbs or whatever is broadcast in HD now ]
