dogs need to eat raw bones. Cooked bones are worthless. The calcium is leached from the bone in the boiling and cooking process. Also the marrow in the bone is then obsolete by cooking it. It also weakens the bones properties and causes it to splinter as the dog chews, it will get stuck in the gut and intestines. It can pierce the intestines and in turn will need an expensive surgery. Getting nice big beef, pork, horse, goat, and sheep bones are great for dogs. Bird bones NOT cooked is ok but they can harbor alot more bacteria that others and can be too small for large dogs and sometimes gets caught in there palates. Contrary to what people say, bird bones are not bad if they ARE NOT COOKED. If they are raw they are just fine. Infact the B.A.R.F diet recommends chicken backs as the primary bone ingredient. Read up on the barf diets all my dogs get BARF diet that I prepare myself with a mix of hard dog food. Totally cleared up all allergies, and certian dietary problems and they shed ALOT less. They poop less and it smells less. With 6 dogs and a yard i need less poop.

Absolutely do NOT feed your dog cooked bones - and especially chicken bones. The digestive juices of a dog cannot cope with bones once they are cooked. Always feed raw bones. Otherwise you run the very real risk of the bones splintering (on eating) and causing untold damage to the inside of your dog. You are lucky you have gotten away with this, so far!! ps If this is a troll q. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Cooked yes they are bad for your dog. As people have said cooking bones changes their composition and they can splinter and cause damage all through your dogs digestive system. It also rids the bone of any nutritional value it had.

Raw bones are an important component to your dogs diet! Just whatever you do don't cook them and feed in appropriate size for your dog. My little dogs get 1/2 a chicken back every morning. They LOVE them, are good for them and they clean their teeth all at the same time!

Cooked bones are more likely to splinter, and cause a dog to choke, or could damage the dog's intestines.

If you want to give bones to your dog, beef bones are best, and give them raw. After the dog takes off the remaining meat, try putting peanut butter inside to make it last.

yes, they are. if you want to feed bones, feed raw bones with lots of meat on them so they don't swallow them whole but chew them. Do not choose weight-bearing bones on large animals (leg bones, etc) because they tend to be so hard dogs will break teeth on them. I just love it when people say that bones are not good for dogs. In the wild, when a dog kills something, they eat the bones. If a dog comes upon some dead thing that's been baking in the sun for months, that dog is going to grab that bone & start gnawing.

Bones are no more dangerous to dogs than a diet coke is to you and me.

There is no safe bone from a live animal for dogs. Better to buy those manufactured chew bones. Real bones splinter and can injure your pet. There are also chew toys that can help your dogs teeth stay clean and that are fun and safe. Try those.
