Calico isn't a 'breed' of cat. It's a color. You can have American Short-haired calico cats, Manx, Persian...all kinds of breeds can be calico. Calico's are almost ALWAYS female, because only female cats can carry the tri-colored gene. If you DO find a male calico...which isn't likely, he will be sterile.

I'm thinkin Les... Those are all the cats I've ever had whom I've had long enough to give a name to. All are from the street except for Critter whom we got from the Humane Society. Some got lost, some I gave away and some died (old age, loose dog, leukemia, tumors, too many fights). The last 4 are all I have (they stay inside) along with Kitty and Eeer (they stay outside). Eeer is a stray I feed and Kitty likes to stay at the neighbors. And none of my cats have ever had babies so yeah... I'm not a part of the problem, I just find a lot of meows. I've had a lot of dogs too. Only 1 now, Leyla - a purebred German Shepherd my dad found.

Calico cats are not any particular breed. It is actually the name for their colouration (orange, brown, tan, and white mixed together). Many different breeds of cats can be this colour, such as tabby cats and Persians. The interesting thing to remember is that only females can have this colouration, never males.

There is no breed of cat called the Calico Cat. That is a Color Pattern not a breed. IT can come in almost any cat breed. Check out this sight it will tell you all the known Pure breeds of cats that are available.
http://www.cfainc.org/
also this will help you understand the COLOR PATTERN called calico, or tortishell
http://cats.about.com/od/felinegenetics/a/colorpatterns_2.htm
WHO EVER IS THUMBING DOWN people who say calico is color pattern, you need to do more research and maybe do some checking on your cat breeds, you are ignorant and not helpful. Obivously you know nothing about cat breeds or colors.
TINKERBELL you need to go back to vet school, they are NOT a breed. So you didnt learn you cat breeds very well

A calico cat is not a breed. Most likely, it would be an American short-Haired cat with calico coloring.

Calico cats are usually a "garden variety", i.e. "heinz 57" types, but can often and most likely be "tabby cats". These are your typical alley cat variations. Sometimes they are referred to as "tortise shell" depending on how large the patches of brown and black are on the cat.
Calico cats are always female. Male calico's rarely, if ever, survive. At least, I've never heard of a true male calico surviving.

Calico is the breed of the cat. You can take a picture of your cat and go to Barnes and Noble and find a book about the cat then you can read about the cat or purcahse the book. They have all kinds of books about cats books which tell you briefings of different kinds with pictures they come in very helpful. Good luck.
