Funny, this question hits close to home...

My uncle Bill Snyder was a painter. He painted things like Minnie Mouse prostituting herself on a street corner and Snow Whit nude surrounded by the 7 dwarfs.

Disney actually tried to sue him and he won $25,000 (many years ago...he has now passed away) because of the freedom an artist has to create. This is what I believe to be the equivalent of free speech in the art world. I might be able to get you in touch with his daughter (as a last resort) if you cant get any other info. sarahshillander@yahoo.com

If you are not planning on making money off what you are doing it really wont matter.

Look into usage rights...they can be expensive...I would just go for it! If you do contact the lawers though, they will try to scare you or get you to pay a lot, so dont get intimidated!

Without knowing what you are exactly planning, you might want to start with their licensing office (link provided). You may want to talk to an attorney that specializes in trademark law to see if your project would fall under fair use.

I think you will only need permission if you create an exact replica ...but if the wall your painting on doesn't get alot of traffic, they really can't do anything after it's already done.
