They will send you a notice notifying you of an offset before they cease your check. If you have been notified though don't expect a check. When you owe the feds they collect you can't file bankruptcey on it either.

If you are in default on your student loans then the IRS may take as much of the refund as needed to satisfy the loan. If you are not in default there will be no reduction in your refund due to student loans outstanding.

Debt has little to do with your tax return, unless you've defaulted on the loan and the government is looking to garnish your wages.
