It really depends on what kind of experience you're looking for. The French Quarter is a great place to stay if you want to be in the center of everything, especially if you're planning on going out in the quarter. You can just walk to your room when the night is over! The Bourbon Orleans (www.bourbonorleans.com) is a very nice hotel located in the quarter with quite an interesting history. It was actually a convent for a number of years, and its ballroom is the rumored site of quadroon balls that were held in the city. The staff may have a few good ghost stories to share with you;) If you want to stay right in the center of Bourbon, the Ramada Inn on Bourbon (http://www.innonbourbon.com/) is in the center of all the action, but be prepared for a little extra noise from the partiers. You can even get a room with a balcony overlooking Bourbon. Bring some beads to toss. This hotel is on the site of the old Creole Opera House that burned years ago. The Central Business District is next to the quarter and offers many modern high rise hotels if that is more your style. The Garden District also offers a selection (including the famous Pontchartrain) which is a streetcar's ride from the quarter.

Location doesn't matter so much as everything is so close. Bette to stay away from the French Quarter, too noisy. I have stayed by Canal St. at the Le Pavilion, great hotel, historic and classy, pool on roof, great service, also, the Sheraton, very nice, great views and not too pricey.
In French Quarter I like the Monteleon, also historic and classy.
