I think the first one means that if a true friend cannnot help you, they will not pull you down.
An example of the second one is that if you see someone who has a lot of money, don't judge them because they may have gotten it through the death of a loved one.

I think the first means that there is no middle ground. In example, if someone couldn't win a friend over to his or her belief, there would be no sense in forcing that person to go along with it.
The second basically means that just because something looks great on the outside, doesn't mean it is really that great. Someone may have a lot of great stuff, but it may have come at a great and painful cost.

"Never envy anyone for what they have" - that sounds like it means that our longing for another's "stuff" is misplaced. . .
and "for you do not know how they came by it" - that seems to infer that the "stuff" came from an unknown source: maybe God gave the item (optimism, for ex) or they stole it (a new bike maybe)
Sounds as thought the second quote means:
Other people have things and you may or may not have those same things - no point in being JEALOUS.

The first- if I can't lift your spirits, I'm not going to force you to do anything you don't want to do.
The second- reminds me that all the nice cars, nice homes, and big screen TV's are often owned by people in debt. If a family is in debt so they can have nice things, they should be pitied. The mom and dad may both be working, sacrificing family time and happiness to pursue material things. How sad.
