I am having surgery on my mouth tomorrow. I am 15 years old, and have a severe fear of , doctors, needles, and dentists. :( I am scared out of my wits. And my grampa keeps talking about it and saying how I could die and stuff. He knows how I feel but he won't stop. I need some coping tips. They are going to give me some relaxation drugs when I get there at 5 am tomorrow, but I am afraid they will be like the last ones and they won't do a thing for me.!!

I feel so nervous, like I am going to throw up! And I have been trying not to think about it but it seems everytime I turn on the radio or tv there always seems to be something about a doctor or hospital on there. I basically need some comfort!!
Please help!!

Actually they aren't giving me gas, they are giving me some sort of sleeping drink, but it isn't going to knock me out. I will still be awake when they put the iv in (that is what I am most worried about)!!

The doctors know all about my fears ( I have had them since I was born) and they have it written in my file. When I had to go for my pre-op check up and meet with everyone I had to get a shot and they had three people in there to try and calm me down (hold me down more like it) and I was crying screaming, and I still have flash backs (everytime I do I start crying)

Did you know that some people have abnormal reactions to the anesthetic and can't move or speak, but they are still concious and can feel the pain? They could also possibly die from shock while this is happening. That would suck.

Ouch dental surgery sucks. I had surgery on my knees, root canals, broken bones and had my wisdom teeth pulled out with novicane only, it doesn't hurt until afterwards. The oral surgeon will numb you up really well and you won't feel anything, right after the procedure make sure to take whatever pain killers they give you so it dulls the pain later when the novicane wears off. Since you seem really nervous, have your mom or dad call the doctor and have them prescribe you .5 mg of zanex to help you relax (it wont make you feel completly better but it will take the edge off).

In regards to your grandfather, back in 1930 sure people could die from surgery but that's because they didn't have the drugs to treat a possible infection one might get after surgery. This is 2007, you will be fine. You'll probably be out and about with your friends in 3 to 4 days. Don't worry you'll be okay. I know it's super scary but you can chalk it up to braging rights later. Enjoy the pain killers and time off you get. Be brave, just remember it could always be worse.

Silver, You are going to be just fine. Please don't let anyone scare you. If possible, as someone already mentioned, get some medicine that can relax you (such as Xanax). Communicate with the dentist or his assistant your feelings so that they can reassure you and tell you step-by-step what will happen. Your grandfather is probably misinformed on modern dentistry.

Be prepared with items to keep you occupied before and after the surgery, such as books, magazines, hand-held video games, etc.

I've had surgery on my teeth several times (having my wisdom teeth removed and oral surgery on an infected root canal). I didn't have any bad side effects, except some pain after the procedures. However, the dentist should give you medicine to negate the pain. In a few days, you'll be back to your old self!

Sometimes just the fear of something makes it far worse than it is. Just take deep breaths and remind yourself that your doctor is a professional and knows what he's doing, and it's a very good chance he's done this kind of surgery many times before so he's very familiar with the procedure. Your parents aren't going to trust you to someone they think would put you in danger.

As for your grandpa, just keep in mind that health problems are all a lot of seniors think and talk about, and a lot of them like to make things out worse than they are or consider worst case scenarios.

Just try to keep calm, and not let the fear get to you. It's normal to be nervous about having surgery.

Im 15 and I had surgery to remove all my wisdom teeth I was soooo scared just like you. I hate needles and hospitals and doctors and surgery alltogether. I was so scared I started crying lol. But anyways what they do is give you laughing gas and you will feel floaty and funny and then they put an IV in your arm and it didn't hurt as much as I expected and then I basically fell aslepp and when I woke up I was just woozy and stuff. I thought I was going to DIE though. I have major anxiety issues when it comes to medical procedures and needles and crap like that. You will be fine. Let me know how it goes.

Peace Out, Ronnie

Don't worry, you will be fine. I've had a lot of surgeries and used to work for a surgeon. When you get there they will give you someting to relax (it will work). Then, they will give you a local, or maybe put you out completely, but whatever way, you won't feel a thing and will be groggy when you are done. Think of it this way, at least when it is all over, you'll be a bit uncomfortable, but at least you can stay home from school for a day, or two.

First of all, tell your grandfather that you are aware of the risks involved in ANY and every surgery. And that him focusing on the negative, when you are so frightened, is making you feel WORSE and hurting your feelings. Make that clear to him and stay away from him.

When you get there in the AM, make sure you tell the nurses and the anesthesiologist about how frightened you are. They will see it with your heart rate and blood pressure, too. They will make sure they give you enough medication so that you can be comfortable. If it's not working, you have to tell them and they'll give you more. That's the good thing about pre-and-post op.....they will make sure you are comfortable while you are there.

You'll do great.

alright, since i had a prob with doctors :Pand since i hate needles too..

you should actually put ur self in this mentality, that its not gonna ruin ur life that its just these few hours in one day of ur whole life!! so dont you worry, listen to some nice chill out music, think of nice things of positive things and especially dont put any prejudice in your mind coz it wont help a bit.

And dont worry abt it, i mean the medical field is soo developped now so there is nothing to worry about.

I hope this kinda helps... ull see it ll be really fast tomorrow..

Okey then GOOD LUCK!! :)

Make sure you tell the hospital staff how you feel, they will take care of you. Theywill give you something to sleep, and the next thing you know you wake up and it is all over. You will be just fine.
