add 2 teaspoons full of bicarbonate of soda to a kettle full of water and boil.
let kettle go cold, rinse and water should taste OK
DO NOT USE VINAGER it will not rinse out, have you ever tried washing pickled onion jars out and using them for jam.....you can taste the vinegar 2years later.

Boil one cycle with a half vinegar half water mixture. Then 2 cycles just water. That should fix the plastic taste problem.

When I have had a new kettle I just fill it to top level and boil once and throw it away. It should be enough if not try the vinegar one.

i would boil water in it for a while ,to get the (new ) out of it. but it might depend on what kind of metal its made of. If it a cast iron pot or pan you need to burn it in the oven , cover it with shortening and broil it in the oven for a couple of hours,it usually takes a couple of times,to get it not to stick when you cook in it.
