Sounds like a working type jack russel terrier. Only the show dogs have a specific standard with jrt's. Working type jrts can be any height from about 12-18" and have smooth or wire coats. They can have drop ears or standing ears. They also have several body types.

The jack russell is a fairly young breed meaning that the type is not exactly fixed. Jacks can vary quite a bit in their appearance from a tall thin dog with smooth fur to a small dog with pudgy legs and wiry fur. Perhaps with a picture we could give more guidance but sometimes it's just a guess and JR could be as good a guess as any.

There are several different types of Jack Russell.
Ask your vet but I think he sounds like a long legged Jack Russell.
I have 2 Jack Russell crosses. Both from the same litter but one has long legs & is longer than the other who has short legs & a much rounder body shape.

Sounds like he might be a wired hair terrier, or a jack russel mix. People think that a J.R. looks short, with short hair, white, with tan spots. Thats what they typically look like, but they can look different.

It sounds like he's more of a mixed breed. Posting a pic would definately help. Goint to the vet would give you better insight on it. They can normally tell you what a dog is, by looking at it. They look at all breeds every day, so.....why wouldn't they be able to tell?

Good luck to ya!!

SC & Estelle are right - Jack Russells - or Parson Russels, as they are called in the world of dog shows, do not have a fixed "type" yet - or what you might refer to as breed characteristics. You know, what makes a breed look like that particular breed instead of just a generic dog.
As for the people that look at you like you're stupid - just ignore them.
I actually owned a black & white champion parti colored American Cocker Spaniel once. People would constantly ask what mix she was & I would explain to them that she was a Cocker Spaniel & nine times out of ten they would correct me & tell me that she was a Springer Spaniel! A very small Springer indeed!
So just laugh at them (not to their faces of course!)
So long as you love your dog, that's all that matters.

this happens sometimes with jack Russells, my neighbour had one, both parents and history known, supervised mating all pups looked very much alike, but her dogs legs just grew untill he had the look of a small fox hound. If you love him it doesen't matter. They were resisted by the Kennel club as a breed for a long time befor being accepted.
Just enjoy your pet.

Black and white sounds like border collie. I have a border collie/JRT cross He has a collie's coat with JRT colouring, and is the size of a JRT. He's also got the eyes of a collie. Dude, you really should post a picture up, cos nobody can answer properly if they cannot see, but from your description it sounds like you got the same as me.

If your dog has a gentle nature, but loads of energy, loves walks and will stand up to anything (lot of cojones), chances are you got a Border Collie/ JRT cross.

Without knowing the parents it would be hard to say. Anyone telling you what breed your dog is mixed with is only guessing. Unscrupulous breeders sometimes lie about breed so it is possible you were sold a mixed breed dog. I think breed shouldn't matter as long as you are happy with your dog
