Decay is entirely preventable, but we have to be taught proper care and then perform it. It's human nature that we sometimes neglect our health e.g. teeth, diet, smoking, ...
As dentists, we have to encourage patients to do the right thing without getting upset in ourselves or humiliating them. It is frustrating when patients (usually children) don't always take advice seriously, but you have to take it in your stride and be practical.
I have lots of nice patients who genuinely try to look after their teeth, but will always have some problems. I am happy to look after them and help them when emergencies arise. But I have refused treatment to people who I feel are using me, not trying at all to maintain their teeth, and expect the red carpet when they have a toothache. They want to be "squeezed in" at short notice without regard for other patients, me, or my staff. I don't get mad at them though, there are polite ways of suggesting that we should part ways.
I think your dentist is genuine and concerned, which is a very good thing, but perhaps he was having a bad day. If it concerns you, ring up his receptionist or practice manager and tell them about it. If you really had been lax in your cleaning, you could also offer a meek apology as a concession from you. A bit of compromise can only strengthen your relationship.

I have had a dentist give me dirty looks for a cavity. My other dentist doesn't seem to be bothered by one or the other. So I guess it all depends on the person. I know people with bad teeth bring them business, but people with good teeth should still go and do for the most part so they bring in business too.

I think yes they do like to get the business of people with problem teeth. But I also think that it frustrates them knowing what problems it causes when people dont take the time to take care of their teeth.

Hygienist have to clean your teeth whether or not you have been taking care. I'm sure they would rather do an easy cleaning rather than cleaning a mouth full of crap.
