It's a test. Why would a mother put a freshly frosted cake on the counter than tell her toddler not too touch it?

That's a very good question, that deserves some thought. If this God is supposed to be omniscient, outside of time and therefor knew completely that Adam and Eve would definately eat the fruit, and the result would be all the pain and misery and suffering in our world, why would he put it there in the first place?
Of course, theologians have had thousands of years to perfect their answers and rationalizations. Which, of course, leads one to wonder, "why so many different answers? why do most of them still make little sense?"
Most people will tell you it has something or other to do with free will. If that's the case, though, when did Satan eat of that tree? What makes Angels so different from Men? And why did God send his son to "redeem" men, but not angels?
Think about the question for a while and you should come to the very easy conclusion: either God is not omniscient and perfect, or that story didn't actually happen.

Because God intended the Garden of Eden to be a classroom where mankind would learn about good and evil and the consequences of their actions. This world is like a classroom full of chaos and order, and as we make choices we are shaped into better moral creatures or worse moral creatures.

As a good father I want my children to be as good and better than I in as many or all aspects of life. I am the best genetic pattern that years of evolution has produced in my family line. I can only want to pass this on. I believe "one of the few" that God has the same goal for me as I do for mine. To create a being worthy of the knowledge of the tree and yes, be a God in my own right. To not partake of the tree would seem to me a total waste of good mental powers. I believe in the Perfection of God and that from Perfection can only come Perfection. From babyhood on up I think that to attain Perfection is the goal and destiny of man. God knew our nature He knew we would partake. Why else would He allow a "failed " experiment to continue. He is not a looser.

'Cause it would burn the kid?
And since everyone knew that, that would mean God would know all the bad stuff that would come from us having free will, thus him knowing about wars, poverty, greed, envy, lust.....ohhh that lust, we know how God hates that lust.
But why did he do it, so we'd love him, not because we were forced to, but because we wanted to spend an eternity in his kingdom where he could have put us in the first place, oh and all those that don't use their free will to choose him, oh yeah baby it's hell.
Don't touch that cake it's hot!

Did this even happen ?Who has proof that "God" planted it therE? Are these just stories by uneducated men or are they true? I am trying to figure it out also. My husband is Catholic but each Catholic has a different interpretation. If it is all true and REAL, why so many opinions on the same story? My take is stories were written to figure out what we all are trying to figure out daily- but I do not know...I do not believe the story

Just to see if Adam and Eve were really paying attention.
I don't think they went again God's rules and basically cast their descendants into a living hell on purpose. They just didn't listen to God's little sermon. Now the talking serpent, THAT was worth listening to.

I don't know too much but i would say that maybe it was some kind of test for Adam and Eve just to see how faith they had in God, and how much they believed in him, but then again the bible had to be fulfilled in any case....God is no fool he knows us by heart and what our intentions are before we do.

To see if they would obey their God who told them, not for any reason to eat the apples. Their was plenty of other fruit for them to eat, and the only request was not to eat the apples. If they never would have eaten the apples, there would not have been evil in the world. OOPS!
