My dad's been in the AL for 30+ years. As a girl, I was not able to join the Sons of the AL but I was in the auxilliary for years and attended Girl's State. As my membersip is not current, I can only make some educted guesses.

Generally any sort of membership in the American Legion, its auxilliary or children's divisions requires that a family member be a veteran of an American war or police action. I believe the Junior AL is the recent update to the Sons of the American Legion which required a parent or ancestor to be a veteran.

If you or one of your ancestors, have proof of serving in the military during certain "war" years, you shouldn't have any trouble. Most Legion's have some pretty decent folk in charge who would be happy to help you - call your local post.

I would call the American Legion and talk to whoever is in charge of membership. I'm not sure if someone in the family has to be a veteran or not for him to become a member. It might be a requirement.
