There is no right answer on when a good time would be to install it on your machine. However if you want something practical, here is some advice...

The only way to know if vista is flawed, safe, secure, reliable is to either
A: Buy it and install it yourself and use it and see.
B: Wait for other consumer reports and occasionally pick up the monthly issue of a computer magazine to see what people have to say about it.

C: You only want to hear advice from Windows users, because Mac or Linux users will have crap to say about it regardless, and they are NOT the ones using it, besides you ARE using windows, and all you want to know is if XP is better or VISTA, so a mac lover or linux lover wont be able to help you.

I myself am a critic of all 3 and use all 3 for seperate applications.

The best advice is to try it yourself and give your own consumer report, or wait on others to...

THE LAST best piece of advice is... Dont upgrade unless you have a specific need that wont WORK unless you install Vista. Having the new latest and greatest thing is NOT always the best.

don't buy it....guess you don't recall or didn't live through the XP nightmares. """"""""""

What the hell? Get a load of that guys answer. XP happens to be one of the most stable versions of windows ever.

Nightmares dont come from operating systems, they come from dumbazz users who dont know how to secure their own computers and look for viruses and spyware and pishing.

Any operating system has flaws, any operating system will have fans and critics...

If you know what you are doing when you use the operating system of your preference, then you will not be stupid enough to have a nightmare take place.

You must format hard drive in order to load XP, and that will cause a loss of all data that is not backed up. Also, before you format the drive, make sure that you have all of the motherboard, sound, and video drivers and software that this laptop requires. After you have completed all of the above you should be able to do a simple XP installation by inserting your XP disk into the CD/DVD drive and restarting your system. The computer should boot from the CD and start the XP installation. After XP has loaded the installation files you will need to follow the instructions on removing and creating the primary partition, and then you will be required to format that partition. After the partition has been formatted you can then load XP. Next, load all drivers. That should do it, your system should now be ready to use. One small question. Why not stick with Vista. I have been using it since it came out, and it works just fine. Sure, it looks a little different, but after all, it's just an operating system, a platform on which your applications run, It is faster and way more stable then XP and much more secure. And we are all going to be running it sooner or later because Microsoft will drop support for XP some day. So why not get a head start of the rest of the folks and learn Vista now.

I wouldn't bother for at least 6 months it's bound to be full of security flaws and bugs (everything MS does always is).
I specially wouldn't bother buying the basic version as that will give you less than you're using now it really is basic.
Read all the reviews you can find and you'll see that many people aren't impressed with vista at all

I think that if you wait till summer will be better, also have in mind that the Vista needs a lot of RAM and a lot of hard disk space.

After the bugs are worked out :-)

You'll want to backup all of your files, bookmarks, addresses, email, etc before you install the upgrade.

How much time have you got to debug some drivers and other little problems? I'd give myself three to four hours.

Wait a year. That is how long it will take to work out all the bugs.
