This is the Official Line:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/systemrequirements.mspx

It vastly underestimates the details of the requirements

Microsoft has their own system requirements on the Vista website, (www.windowsvista.com).

As I have used Vista since beta 2. Here are the Requirements that I would Recommend.

2 GB of RAM
A Decent SATA Hard drive
At LEAST an nVidia 7800 GS
An AMD or Intel Dual Core processor.

Takes a large style of hd area and memory- entire hogger. you elect a minimum of 2gb of mem and 3.0ghz pc , plus video card to get bettter overall performance. Linux Os even have cool photos that required much less specs than vista
