I know many people who have taken on a lawyer, some have had a nightmare with them, some have got their paperwork quicker and some have been conned.
Its a risk you take.
I like many others decided not to hire a lawyer and do it ourselves.
I unfortunately had a nightmare of a time, mainly because we filed few months before 9/11 which caused chaos, losing our files, backlog etc etc
I also believe things can cause delays depending your situation, depending from which country you are from, and especially which office you file at in this county (US).
Some offices are so overwhelmed with paperwork that the process of immigration is taking a long time. Not forgetting to mention the constant changes in filing now.
Chicago is the worse!
I would suggest do your homework thoroughly first, prepare well, and make sure you have copies of everything, especially of what you send them (forms).
Its also a good idea to make a journal, this way you have everything listed on it and can look back on in case you need dates etc
There are pros and cons for a lawyer or do it yourself.
The only difference between the two of them is the cost.
Wish you luck whatever you decide :)

Hi,
If you have a straightforward case then do not waste your time.
A lot of people think that hiring a lawyer will make the immigration guys sit up and take notice; it doesn't.
What's more; whatever country your lawyer is in - they are not allowed to accompany your fiance to their visa interview.
It's just about sitting down and filling in the blanks. name addresses, jobs education etc. The lawyer is going to ask you for all that info - then you are going to pay him $1800 to type it in!!!
If your case is more complicated eg: criminal convictions, refused entry, misrepresentation, deportation, then I would seek legal advice, as you will have papers prepared (such as appeals and applications for waivers of ineligibility) by the lawyer.
Good Luck!
(We used a lawyer and he was hopeless and we eventually got married in the UK where we still live)

Look first of all trying to get through this k-1 process by taking a shortcut is going to get you a lot of heartache and drama. Trust me I have seen people try to take a shortcut and they go through so much drama. Listen there are some outstanding immigration attorneys in La Jolla California who specialise in k-1 and other visas. They have a web site: Here is the link: http://www.fianceevisas.com/
Go to this website and read about the process of getting a k-1 visa. After you read the information on this site they have a toll free number. Call these people, it is a free call. I promise you when you get through talking with these people you will see it is best to hire someone like these people to go through this process. Trust me the bcis people when they process the paperwork if they see one little thing out of place they will send it back. Read the testimonials on this web site and you will see, taking the shortcut is not the way to go. Really if you get these people it will be worth every penny you pay and more. This is what these people specialise in. Go to the site, read the information (testimonials) of people who used their services, and then read the testimonials of people who tried to take shortcuts. I promise you will not regret using these people to help you get through with the k-1 visa process.

If your case is not complicated (i.e., no divorces, you have a legitimate relationship, you have proof of your relationship, and neither of you have ever committed crimes or broken any immigration laws), and you are able to follow "legal-eze" instructions and can fill out forms, you don't need a lawyer.

It's a hard process, hire a lawyer. It can cost you a lot in time and money if you don't.
