On Tuesday I went in to the dentist because the left side of my mouth was very swollen and painful. They gave me antibiotics and said I needed to get my wisdom teeth pulled. They made the appointment for tomorrow(Friday)... now will they be able to take out my wisdom teeth if my infection isn't fully gone? I've been taking the antibiotics for only 3 days now, and the swelling has gone down, but it's definitely not gone.

I agree with Nacho above.
It would be helpful to have the infection subdued, but it is not always possible or desirable to eliminate it altogether before an extraction. No matter how many antibiotics you take, sometimes these problems just get worse because the cause has not been removed i.e. the tooth. Bacterial resistance is an increasing concern with prolonged antibiotic usage.
The real aim is to get rid of CAUSE as soon as possible, and THEN the antibiotics will be able to HELP complete the tidyup of the remaining infection. I have no hesitation in removing teeth despite infection if I believe it is achievable and in the patient's best interests.
The 3 D's of dental treatment are : 1. Diagnosis, 2. Dental treatment, and 3. Drugs - in that order.
Best of luck.

My husband has never been able to have a tooth pulled until the infection is completely gone.

This is what webmd says:
An oral and maxillofacial surgeon or your dentist can remove (extract) a wisdom tooth. The procedure often can be done in the dentist's or surgeon's office. You may have the surgery in the hospital, especially if you are having all your wisdom teeth pulled at once or if you are at high risk for complications.

If you have any infections, surgery will usually be delayed until the infection has cleared up. Your doctor or dentist may have you take antibiotics to help heal the infection.

You can read the rest at the following link.

Good luck.

Yes, you will most likely still have the extraction. The reason the doctor gave you the antibiotics is not only because he wanted to eliminate the infection for easier healing post operatively, but also because when infection is present, the anesthetic will not work that well. After a few days on antibiotic therapy, the injections will be more effective and the doctor can proceed with the extraction.

The tooth will have to be pulled. If it isn't the wisdom tooth will begin to push your other teeth which will cause continual ear infections and tension migranes. i went through the similiar thing. Good luck on friday, hope you feel better
