I personally am not into theme bedrooms, kids grow out of them to quickly. I would choose bright cheerful colors, maybe shades of raspberry or blueberry. Use one wall area to create a chalkboard wall. Make sure the chalkboard is a shade darker than the wall. It's really easy, in any space.
Material:
3 teaspoons acrylic paint [colour of choice]
1 1/2 teaspoons glazing medium [water based]
1/2 teaspoon powder tile grout
How to: Mix together all of the ingredients listed above, blend really well and that's it. You now have chalkboard paint! You should only mix as much as you will need for your project. It doesn't keep well, but can be stored in an air tight container for a few hours. After a longer period of time, the paint will begin to thicken a little and become a bit brittle.
Helpful Hints:
Apply your paint with a regular paint brush and allow each coat of paint to dry completely, before applying the next. After each coat of paint, gently sand the paint with a 400 grit or higher grit sandpaper and wipe away any dust. This will help keep your painted surface nice and smooth.
You also need to condition your chalkboard, once you have finished painting. Be sure your paint is completely dry. Place a piece of chalk on the side and rub over the entire chalkboard surface, covering the entire area with chalk. Using a felt cloth, wipe off the chalk you just applied. With a slightly damp cloth, wipe the chalkboard clean.
The kids will LOVE it! Also, make sure they have a low book case. This room will inspire them to grow and learn.
As for the floors, is heat is not an issue, I'd use tile, easy to clean and lasts forever.

Please let your children help decide even if not directly. What TV shows are they into? What is their favorite book? What colors do they like most. Since you need a room for both girls and boys choose something they will all like and not fight over. Many things can work for both. Animals, farm or forest. the circus seems to be getting popular with JoJo's circus. Under the sea themes work well for both. Think sunken treasure ,mermaids, and nemo! Fantasy works well. Boys love knights and armor, girls love princesses or fairies, unicorns, castles... If you don't want a theme room I would go with bright colors.Sherbert colors would work well. Choose a color for each child then mix and match the room with these colors. Remember to give each child a space the call their own. Also put in a work space where they can create art work have tea parties ... This can later be their study area. There are so many answers. Let your children choose the right one for themselves.

Firstly, check out some kids rooms designed by Ikea:
http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=18&catalogId=10103&langId=-26&categoryId=15567&wa=1
You want a kids room to be fun yet also functional. Each child should have there own study/sleep/storage-toy space.
Firstly walls/carpeting:
- Use a wipe clean non-lead gloss paint for walls. I prefer non-cream/whites as they seems to stain easily.
- Use Scotchguard on carpets, or consider getting some cheap rugs in heavy traffic areas (centre/near door) of room. Hard flooring would be much easier to clean and maintain, but kids tend to fall and slip on them much more.
- If you havn't already, get a safety switch electric board, and use plug covers for unused electric wall plugs.
Secondly - Organise for the mess:
- Consider getting a toy tub where the kids can dump there toys when not playing with them. Check out www.tubtrugs.com who make a special rubber tub that can be used for lots of things. They are really great for storing toys and come in great colors.
- You'll want a low table and chair where the kids can do school work and paint. Look at the kids tables/chairs at Ikea.
- Have a theme for the kids rooms and bedding - racing car, farm, sea-side to make the room fun! You can mix themes in the same room, which will help divide the areas for the kids also - they need their own space.
- When a bit older get the kids to put away toys into there tubs and clothes away by turning it into a group 'game' - don't turn it into a chore. That way they'll start habit of putting things away and keeping things organised.
- Have a part of the wall set aside for wall posters and height charts. All kids like to draw on walls - if you have wipe and wear paint (especially for crayons), and also a paper wall poster where they can draw you'll save lots of clean up pain.
Hope this helps! And have lots and lots of fun!

Yellow and Green, close to pastel shades is the best bet. These colors keep the room bright and warm, most importantly they are unisex colors. You can try to find their favorite TV show and use that as a theme, If they don't agree with a show you can always go by good old fashion themes like Noah's arc, plain animals or alphabets and many more.

I have two Boy/Girl who share a room and I have been contemplating this myself.
Ideas I have thought of:
1. Jungle
2. Space and astronauts
3. Circus
4. Knights and Princesses (Excalibur style)
5. Farm
I personally am leaning towards space because there are so many decorations that lend themselves to learning.
Have fun. I hope theses ideas can help.

go with a nature theme..... if you are planning on painting the walls, paint tree's on the walls one in a corner of the room with it extending to the ceiling.... have butterflies, dragonflies and lady bugs or bees handing from the ceiling... wit hfishing line. You can buy them at a nature store or a local natural history museum.
Paint the ceiling blue like the sky, add glow in the dark stars so they glow at night before they go to sleep.
Create a tent with tool or sheer material, and have a little table set up or an entertainment area in there for movie time/ crafts.
Good luck!

This could be a fun project. If your kids like animals, you can do a zoo or farm or even ocean motif. With basic primary colors, these themes can be for boy or girl and are ones that they wont outgrow too quickly.

i have a 7 year old boy and 5 year old girl so i needed something for both too. i'm doing a tiki/polynesian theme. with my son's side i'm going more with a 50's surf vintage-y feel with hula girls and tiki mugs . for my daughter i'm doing more of an asian thing with paper parasols and tropical flowers. there is lots of bamboo and blues and lime green throughout to tie it together. the whole thing is kinda kitshy and fun. i don't know if that's your style but maybe it will help.
