It does usually vary by command, but it's been my experience that if you are at least an E-4 they will approve. I moved off base when I was an E-4 while on shore duty and was receiving VHA/BAQ, but when I transferred back to a sea going command they were ok with me keeping my apartment, as long as I could afford it and was able to get myself to work everyday.
If you are an E-5 or above you may qualify for BAH, depending on your duty station.

After you're an E-4 you get BAH as if you had dependants. Otherwise I don't think you get ANY BAH. You can go here and look up the cost of BAH with any rank.

Rent for a place out in town will probably be at least half of your pay anyway, not worth it. You're not the only one that doesn't want to live at the barracks.

not as a Private no. It depends on where he is stationed and how much room is left in the bricks. In quantico, VA, a Sgt can't get BAH because there is way too much room in the bricks. (my bf's brother) on New River in jville, NC, it is possible as a Corporal but difficult. (my boyfriend did as a Cpl) You're bf is quite some time away from getting single BAH. If you have a job as well, depending on where he is stationed, you may be able to swing a one bedroom. What is his MOS jw, some jobs pick up rank sooner than others. feel free to email me. I'll tell you what I can or I'll ask my bf. I'll also tell you what a pain in the A it all was, still is, and factors that need to be considered.

Yes you can you have to maintain a room at the barracks if you don't receive BAH but depending on your rank and your units policies you could receive BAH. I know that my husbands unit is trying to get it okayed that E-4's and E-5's receive BAH and move out because there is just not enough room for them in the barracks.

In the USMC, if you are single, you are required to keep a room in the barracks. If you choose to live off base on your own, you will pay for it on your own. There isn't a whole lot they can do to stop you. Good luck affording it though. I knew of some that did it, and they were always short on money. My roomate in the barracks my last year did it. It was nice for me, cause basically, I had my own room, since he was never there. His rack was made, and never slept in, so I didn't mess with it, minus dusting it off on field day.
I am sure in the Navy, it will be along the same lines.

Why would one care if one was single? Even if you are just of a middle rank free rent is the way to go. The military of any branch is geared to giving extra to MARRIED servicemen. They see it as that one is single they are giving you a bunk.
Even if you want to live off base the average person does not make enough to afford it and in most cases it is silly to do so. People who are married still usually have to put themselves on a wait list for housing. They figure that if a service member is not smart enough to figure all of this out...... tough beans. The responsible ones do.
BAH and married pay is what they give. There is a reason.

command discretion. most sea duty, for instance, you have to be a certain paygrade before you can live off the ship.although many bases now have barracks available for sea duty sailors now.
frankly, most first termers can't afford to live out in town with BAH.. and those that do get BAH often get roomamtes becuase they still can't afford it. and anybody E5 and up automatically get BAH if they choose.

In the Marine Corp if you live off base you receive a certain amount each month for rent. The amount depends on the cost of living in that area, but that's the USMC I don't know about the Navy♥

yes you can (not supposed to but most look the other way) we referred to it as ghosting because you still had a room in the dorms, but you lived off base. I would let your supervisor know just in case of a emegency recall, they know were to go if they cant call you.
