I would like to help my parents (in their mid-late 60's) improve their health. My mom has high blood pressure and high cholesteral and has had mini-strokes. They run their own business and eat very few meals at home. The insulated lunch bag and the microwave are their greatest allies. Any suggestions on things I can prepare in advance and freeze that they can simply heat and eat? They are very midwest in their current eating habits- meat and potatoes, salt and pepper, etc. Thanks!

P.S. I am familiar with the ideas of fresh veggies and fruit, pre-cut and ready to eat. I know the basics of healthy eating but am looking for more ideas and suggestions.

LESS Meat, Potatoes and Salt. MORE steamed veggies or blanched veggies, less meat and much less white veggie and starches..

Cook two light portions of WHOLE GRAIN pasta, toss with steamed or blanched veggies and seasonings, a little olive oil and light garlic flavoring. The meat can be chicken breast chunks or a tuna steak broken up. This is just one simple Idea.

My Husband and I are 65 and he was diagnosed with diabetes about 8 years ago. So our entire eating habits have changed.
We were born in Iowa and Michigan, the meat and potatoes capitols of the world. So we know what you mean.

At this age in life our systems seem to get all messed up, usually because of the meds we take for a lifetime of incorrect eating and natural body changes..

Each morning we now drink 1/2 cup of Aloe Vera Juice (for digestion), and 1/2 cup of prune juice (for bowel digestion) and 1/2 cup cranberry drink (for flushing toxins from the kidneys).
It is working very well. And we are both doing surprisingly well.
Just put it all on one cup and drink it down or it could be premixed by the 1/2 gallon for ease.

We eat smaller graizing meals. MUCH LESS BEEF AND VERY LITTLE PORK, some hamburger (very lean) chicken, fish, turkey breasts. We now split meals when we go out, sometimes adding an extra side salad. This cuts cost and intake of calories and fats.

Get them each a 6 pack of bottled water (different brands so they can identify their own). We refill these at night and carry them in small cooler bags and drink 6 bottles daily. This helps constantly flush the system.

The CRANBERRY Concentrate is unsweetened from a health food store. It is $17.00 a pint in Florida and makes two gallons of cranberry drink. It is very helpful in flushing the toxins out .

Most of this will be their willingness to change. But it is fabulous that you want to help them out. Good Luck.

Almost anything can be frozen. I do it all the time. Even if you can just help them with portion control, it should help them.

I recommend 'baby steps' to get them off the 'mid west' diet - My grandmother is from that part of the country, and even though she's been on the East Coast for 50+ years, I'm still shocked at the way she eats. If they're anything like my family from the mid-west, they need to cut way back on salt. No more sliced tomato turned white with salt.

Try getting them to cut back on their red meat - more chicken - Not Fried :) - Try salt substitutes as well - Mrs. Dash is really good, as well as "Salt Sense".

I'll make homemade soups, stews, chili, and freeze it, just pop it out and heat it up. Add a fresh salad (right from the bag), and you've got a great meal.

how about weight watchers meals or lean cuisine?
they have some great frozen stuff now....or making some big crock pot meals on weekends and having them for the week :)
