the british accent is a very peculiar thing to learn it is not as you hear it in films we dont all talk like that .we have regional accents which vary from town to town,if you are welsh scottish irish or english it can be different also what part of wales scotland or england as well ,so good luck to you as i am born and bred british and dont understand all the accents on this island of ours .oh by the way with the constant influx of immigrants coming her from europe add another factor to deal with polish english accent for one .

you have to give yourself some time to get used to the accent. one way i learned to get used to hearing it is by learning how to speak with a british accent. i went to the UK and it was a blast learning all the different accents. now when i'm here and around people i dont know i pull it out and they think im a natural. just give it some time to get used to it and you'll be fine. just watch the four harrry potter movies over and over again or you can wathc other british , or american, films with hugh grant in them. happy learning!

regional accents within the UK vary greatly

Glasgow, Newcastle & Liverpool, are some of the better known accents.

We can talk very fast, so you may have difficulty understanding some of us.

Look on the web for "Living Memory" sites in the UK.
some will contain recordings of peoples memories of the past in their own words

It should be fine! I'm French and I can understand a lot of what they are saying, so I would imagine an American can do the same!

Then, for slang words, go to an online UK slang dictionary. It should definitely help you understand all the slang they use.
