The problem is that I have spent the last three days building it exactly to my taste, and I really have no wish to dismantle it. Does any one have any ideas before I light it?

You spent three days building a bonfire? If it took you that long, I'm not surprised the turtle had time to crawl in one side and out the other during that time! Then you ask the question in the photography category? I'm afraid you need more help than those in this category are qualified to give.

There is a turtle mating call on side 2 of Oasis' last but one album, if you play track 3 backwards at 45 rpm.
For tortoises you would probably need the Encyclopaedia Britannica article on Papua New Guinea, but ignore all the headhunter info -- don't allow yourself to become sidetracked at this crucial stage of Guy Fawkes celebrations.

Try to entice it out with it's favorite food. It really just depends on how much you like your pet tortoise whether or not you will light the bonfire with the tortoise in there. I hope you get your tortoise out!

You better go search for that tortoise. Even if it means pulling the bonfire to pieces

The solutions already given have coated lots of the techniques spiders use to construct webs. yet one neat function replaced into no longer coated. some spiders migrate using their webs. They build a small (enormous to them) sac like shape out of their internet while they are on the outstanding of a bush or tree(or man made shape) and while the air currents are outstanding, they launch it dragging them with it like we'd in a balloon. there are particular areas the place you are able to truthfully see them migrating on their webs. I observed this as quickly as interior the Sierra Nevada mountains.

If it is a male strap a box to your back and make the mating sounds of a female and visa versa. This should work, if not im sure the smell of petrol will scare it out.

smoke him out. Build a small fire next to it and get it good and smokey using paper. Then put it out and guide the soke to the unlit bon fire. He'll crawl out in a jiffy (well maybe not a jiffy to our standards!! ;o)
Good luck.
