What country are you in? Children travel with grandparents all the time, it's not a problem. Your father in law having your son's passport is proof enough of your consent but a letter is probably a good idea in case of difficulties. Also, if it's your father in law, presumably they share the same last name? Even easier!

I've just read the answer above mine - she's scary!!

omg - and the one above that!

He basically needs your permission and your sons passport. Our Daughter has been taken out of the country many times by my in-laws and it's never been a problem!

As long as the child has a passpport he'll be OK. they may get asked some questions at passport control as to wether you know if he is out of the country, but it should be fine.

It would probably be a wise idea for you to write him a note giving him written permission to take his grandson out of country.

Are you presently married or divorced????
do you trust this man implicitly???
If your son is under 16 I would say no.....
If you are divorced I wouldn't let him go.
People sometimes take children to the father to live in remote areas and don't return with them... if he is planning on taking him anywhere near saudi arabia, or palestine or morocco, I wouldn't let him.
It is a very dangerous place and you might not see him again......
Sorry, but you can never be too careful with your children...
