I'm in Canada, and have been reading AKC news and noticed there is a spay/neuter law in somes of the States. Does this mean one cannot own an "intact" dog or cat? What States if any have that law?

Additional info:
The articles I read were regarding breeder's and how certain State's were attempting pass a law on spay/neuter unless the breeder was i.e. improving the breed, amoung other things..

One person wrote in to say in his State, spay/neuter was law..even if you were not a breeder.

WV was one of the States that has a law tabled at this time regarding spay/neuter.

It's hard to find info.. so anyone who know's anything about it..please reply.

I don't know of any state that requires a dog/cat to be neutered/spayed. I know that some states may require that when you adopt a dog/cat that they be spayed/neutered.

I know in Massachusetts there is no law requiring an animal to be spayed/neutered. There are certain things that give you a discount if your dog is neutered. State law requires that your dog be licensed in the city you live, in Boston they encourage you to spay/neutered your dog by giving you a lower price to license.

I do not think there will be a law that requires people to spay/neutered their pets. I find that there is nothing wrong with breeding a dog if you are doing it to improve the breed or to produce show dogs, that's pretty much it and it's only a select few that do that. Otherwise people should neutered/spay their dogs/cats.

It would be a daunting task to uncover the animal-related laws across the country! I do believe that almost all states require that dogs and cats adopted from a shelter be spayed or neutered by a certain age or within a specified time following adoption. I live in Chicago, Illinois - I do not know of any city in the area that mandates spaying/neutering beyond shelter-adopted pets or that requires a permit to have an intact pet.

It should be that way in every state. But it's probably not enforced even if it is on the law books anywhere.
