A karyotype is the arrangement of all of the chromosomes found in the cell. Specialized visualizations of this arrangement can be achieved, one of which is an idiogram (usually presented as a photograph). If you stain the chromosomes with Giemsa stain, which targets phosphate groups in the DNA, you can see the banding pattern of the pair of chromosomes (each pair will show a similar banding pattern). Spectral Karyotyping highlights each chromosome with a different color, allowing the viewer to see and identify each unique chromosome in the karyotype arrangement. This can be achieved using fluorescent probes.
