I have an appt for a root canal today - but I have a cold, runny nose, sore throat. What are the chances they will turn me away?
I have waited 4 months for this appointment....should I "fake well" and not tell them about my sore throat? I really just want to get this thing taken care of.

I agree with LaLa above.
It doesn't bother me if patients have colds or anything, as long as they feel comfortable and are able to manage the treatment. It's not so much a matter of the potential infection to us that concerns me (you could have more worrisome problems e.g. Hep C that you might even not know about!) because standard infection control procedures take care of these risks.
Dope your self up with medicines to control your symptoms and go for it if YOU feel well enough. It would be polite and wise to tell them of your symptoms so they understand what you're going thru. You will have no effect on the anaesthetic.

If you won't be able to sit there without sneezing or coughing for at least an hour, then you should try to reschedule the appointment. But, if you can take something that will keep it under control, then go for it. A concern is that you may not be able to breathe properly through your nose while they have the rubber dam on your mouth. Or the post-nasal drip from your sinuses could run down your throat and you feel like you could choke on it. It's up to you, but you may want to wait until you're in better health. Then again, people go in with colds all the time. Ask your dental office what they would suggest. =)

I don't think it would affect it. The anaesthetic is injected right next to the nerve. I've had a filling done with cold meds and it didn't affect it, but for something more invasive like a root canal, it would be best to consult your dentist. Even your pharmacist should be able to answer that since they know a lot of the contraindications for many drugs.

Reschedule the appointment. Tell the dentist you have a cold, maybe he will order you an antibiotic, then in 7 or 10 days, go back and have the work done.
However, if you are already on an antibiotic, it may be safe to go ahead and have the work done.
If you aren't taking anything for your cold, it is NOT a good idea for the dentist to do the work because your resistance is down.
Better to be safe than sorry.

You dont have to cancel, they wont care. They wear masks anyway. You might have a hard time though because when they do a root canal the dentist will use a ruuber dam and you might have a hard time breathing with it. They put a ring around the tooth called a clamp and the rubber dam fits around the clamp. They do this to isolate the tooth they are working on.Your whole mouth will be covered with it and you will need to breath through your nose.

Hi MaryK, If you have been taking antibotics for at least 24 hours then you should be able to go to the dentsit. Without the dentist catching strep. Drink lots of honey with fresh lemon good for the throat. Get well soon! :0)

You need to let your dentist know - maybe they can work you in shortly. Having the room canal while you a sick could be dangerous to your health.
