Hey Gothic. I'm so sorry you're going through this. Let me tell you a little story, okay? I had my cat for almost 20 years when she started getting sick. Lost a lot of weight, quit eating, would fall down just walking. It was terrible. I knew what I had to do. As hard as it was, I had her put down. Why? Because I loved her enough. I didn't want her to suffer. I held her while they did it because I wanted to be the last person she saw. It is extremely hard but if you have enough love for him, you can do it.

The drug used to put animals to sleep is actually an anaesthetic agent for horses and cows. Basically the put-to-sleep procedure it to give an overdose of anaesthetic - the animal literally falls asleep as the anaesthetic takes effect, and then dies while asleep. It is a very peaceful process, truly the best way to go. The 'first shot' people are talking about is a sedative. This isn't always given, just sometimes if an owner requests it. Is usually unnecessary, as a sick animal will not be active and will hold still for the intravenous injection. I've attended literally hundreds of euthanasias. The only time animal ever react to the injection at all is if they're old and maybe scared, sometimes feeling suddenly sleepy makes them feel weird and they might jump around a bit. The injection is so quick though - once it's in the blood (and it is injected directly into the blood) it takes literally seconds to take effect. There is no pain in the process, the drug doesn't sting. Chalice

If your cat is dying and cannot get better, this is the kindest thing that you can do for him. By NO means is it inhumane. You certainly do not want him to suffer needlesly. Give him all the love that you can, take him to your vet and hold him and talk to him and he will very painlessly go to sleep. No more pain.. It is not easy to do but you will have the world lifted from you after he is not suffering anymore, believe me, I have experienced it before.Grieve for him, and then find another one that you will love too. Good luck.. you will find the strength...

It is not inhuman at all. The vet will just give him a shot and he will fall asleep. No pain at all. The shot is just a poke, not painful at all. Sounds like he is suffering and you should put him to sleep.
Get yourself another kitten in a few days or weeks, which ever you are more comfortable with and try again.
Sorry about your kitten

If the animal is suffering and there is no hope of recovering then it's the kindest thing. Why prolong it? It's not inhuman, it's very human. If he was living wild he would probably have died by now in agony. It's sad but delaying isn't going to make it any easier. It's one of the hardest decisions a pet owner ever has to make but sometimes it has to be done.

I don't think its inhumane. I think that letting the poor little guy suffer is more inhumane. Do what your gut tells you though...its the best way to go.
Have you brought the kitten to the vet??

this is a very hard decision to make. i use to work at a shelter and saw the heartache when people would bring in animals to be put to sleep. the big concern is quality of life - you want your cat to have a good quality of life and not be in pain. right now according to your description the cat is failing and in pain. it is hard but at least the poor thing won't be suffering anymore.
it is not inhumane since the poor kitty is suffering

If your cat is suffering and the vet has told you that he is going to die anyway. Its very best to go ahead and put him down. I have had to do it before and it is hard but its better than letting the little thing lay there and suffer.

How sad, what happened??? You can email me... I think that it is considered humane as long as the reason for doing it outways the bad things like he will not be alive...If he is suffering maybe the doctor can prescribe something. Just give him lots of love and try to ease his pain by making him comfortable and giving him attention. I'd like to know what happened. I have 2 kittens myself and I'd like to be aware of any dangers.

It is and will be hard but if the cat/kitten is ill and will not recover, you need to end its pain. Its about the cat . . not you. You said it yourself " . . . I don't have have such gut to do it". What's more important . . you emotional pain or the cat's physical pain?
