Not sure why you think it is missing. I teach at a university and we have all the academic freedom we can handle, as it were.

We already have the answer. Its called state colleges, community colleges, small private colleges and non-traditional (accredited) degrees.
Competition has entered the picture. When there is sufficient competition, those at the top of the heap can no longer afford to be elitist, intellectually exclusionary, lockstep thinkers - or they risk their audience.
If they insist on what I call "Academia accepting diversity in all areas except for diversity of thought", that is okay - we all can vote with our feet, by finding some place that suits us better.
Yay!!
(Note the recent Time (I think) article on the declining popularity of the ivies.)
