Actually, the six pack originates from back in the day, it was believed that 6 beers was the maximum amount that a waitress could carry without spilling/dropping any. I heard this on a fun fact tv thing just a few days ago.. I'm not sure about the cigarettes.....

Because some guy said "Hey pick up a 6 pack while your at it".Cigarettes to make you think that you will only smoke a couple a day, and would only have to buy a pack a week.In the southern states they sale little Miller bottled beers in a 8 pack, great for fishing. Then you can say"I'm not drunk I only drank a few ponies",when they stop you for a DUI.When divided up per pack, the price sounds cheaper...That's why they chose those amounts..Good Question.

Back in the old days, the way items were packed on shipping crates dictated the size of containers. It was found to be convient to sell beer by the 6 pack because it wsa easier to crate and ship in those small packs. Things have changed since then. As far as cirgarettes, they were designed to meet the match packs, that came twenty matches to a pack. Little trivia note: Those old paper match packs were designed to accomidate blind people. If you bend one match over from the pack, the head of the match rest exactly on the striker paper. So easy a Caveman could do it :)

It's just convenient sizes and convenient for pricing purposes. In other countries where people are poorer, cigs come in smaller packs. Interesting, though.
