It generally takes an hour to about up to 3 hours or more, depending on the braid style. You said you are getting twists, so I assume you may getting kinky twists. Those are really cute and they last a long time. Most people do get the hair color to match their own so that it looks more natural, but you can also get your natural hair color and a bag of a lighter color and when weaved together, you'll look like you have highlights. It definitely takes longer to get micros so I would stay away from that if you don't like prolonged braiding. You may want to take a few aspirin before you go, especially if you are tender headed. They usually don't hurt too much, just ask your hair braider to not braid so tightly and it will be more comfortable for you. Hope this helps.

well I put braids in my hair all the time.
ADV
-u don't have to fuss about your hair for ahwile
-you can keep them in for even 2mths
-it helps hair grow out- some ppl use it when they've cut their hair and in the awkward faze where there hair hasn't really grown out long yet
DISADV
-takes long, depending on the style and length it can take more than 4hours. seein u want them long twists, u better carry a good book cuz u'd be on ur butt for a while
-when u take them out your hair is really thin and u see a lot of dead hair coming out. don't worry though. In about a week it'll be back to normal
-if you braid them too tight u can pull back your hairline
If you're not accustom to pulling your hair into styles then yea.. take an asprin. Most ppl of african descent think it doesn't hurt at all cuz we're accutom to pulling and styling or hair.. but I don't expect a 'white-american' to say it doesn't hurt, they'll die lol. It only hurts a little when they braid it becuase they pull tight but it slackens a day or so after.
You don't have to get them your hair colour.. I guess if you want it to look more natural you would match the colour but it doesn't really matter
I reccommend you buy a braid spray also.. it keeps your scalp nourished and helps with the tightness and itching. African Pride has a great braid spray but u can buy pretty much any brand
I like the 1's where they plait up to a certain point and they leave majority of it unbraided and it's str8. those or i like when they do the tight twists or the 'nappy' braids that look like natural hair. depends on ur taste and what style goes good with you

Well, I don't know about everyone elses experience, but I can tell you about mine. It takes just about as long as micros. On average 5-8 hours, don't let them lie to you.... And as for hair color, go wild!!! This is the time to get color... If you want to be blond buy a bag of blond mixed with brown,so it can match your natural color without looking too fake. It's a great way to get color without being perminant or harsh to your hair. Go for it girl!!! As for pain, it is about the same level of pain, since it is the same process. To be able to twist they first must BRAID the extenstion to your hair, then they start twisting it after about 1/2inch. And yes, I would take asprin before you go , not because your head will be hurting, but your butt from sitting so long... but the benfits outweigh the pain... Beautiful hair that you don't have to style!!!

Everyone has provided great answers so I won't repeat what they said. Yes braids hurt and depending on WHO does your hair it can really hurt. If you are tender-headed (like me) tell them this before they start, my braids were so tight once I cried and took some of them out the same day. There is a braid loosening spray by "Dr. Miracle" that you can buy from Sally's and it really works. It has an anti-inflammatory ingredient that soothes your scalp after having your braids done.
In my own personal opinion, a sew-in weave is better than braids any day! They don't take as long and you have more versatility depending on the type of hair you buy. Good Luck! :)

One of my sorority sisters got her hair braided and weaved every other week. Before each visit, she'd pop 2 advils to prevent inflammation of her scalp about an hour beforehand. Her braids almost never matched her naturally raven-black hair, and that versatility is one of the reasons she preferred braids over getting her hair relaxed.
Depending on the size of your braids will determine how long it takes, but be ready for anywhere between an hour to 3 hours. The weaving of the braids doesn't hurt as bad as the preparation of your hair for them. That friggen hurts. I'm asian with medium-coarse, medium thick hair, and my stylist (the 1 time I got my hair braided) called me a tender scalp, lol. By the time they get to the weaving, your scalp will be so sore, burning, and numb that you won't feel it.
All in all, it's well worth it. It looked amazing. Will I do it again? Probably not, but then again, I have very healthy, long and shiny hair, so I don't need to.
Hope you like the outcome!

Twists take a shorter amount of time than micro's and twists don't hurt at all, you can actually do twists on yourself in the comfort of your own home...It just takes a couple of hours..and it is better to match the color to your own hair if you want them to look good and last..No need to take an aspirin I've had them..and it didnt hurt at all....Here is a how-to website..just in case you're interested in saving your money and they also share great after care info....

well twists shouldn't take as much time to put in as micros. cuz micros take FOREVER... and good thing about it is that it's easier to take out, and it will mostly grow ur hair so thats a good thing. bad thing is that the first week of course it's going to be itching and stuff. also u would have alot of shedding but that's suppose to happen, but other than that u'll be cool.. I HOPE U LIKE THEM WEN IT'S FINISHED

bypass to mattress at like 11:00 (or in the previous could be greater desirable), and awaken at 6:15. Then, I advise figuring out on your clothing out the day earlier, and having them set up. From 6:15 to 6:30 awaken, and dress. From 6:30 to 6:40 5 brush tooth, hair, and wash face and arms. From 6:40 5 to 6:50 get your bookbags and stuff downstairs and in a position to bypass. From 6:50 to 7:05 consume breakfast. relax, or do something greater desirable, for the subsequent 5 minutes. basically attempt to get waiting interior the morning, set out the breakfast, your clothing, and your lunch, (the failings that may not get spoiled)
