Stretching helps realign soft muscle tissue to maintain good posture. It also helps maintain a good range of motion.

If you dont move a particular body part for a long time, your tendons and muscles begin to tighten, your body then sends signals to have the feeling of wanting to stretch. This will counteract the tightening of the muscles and keep it loose.

The effect is amplified in older people. In nursing homes they are encouraged to stretch because if they do not, the muscle will begin to deteriorate and cause painful contractors. This can happen to younger people too, but its not as common because younger people are more active.

Stretching for sports and in the mornings when you wake up is all for the same reason, you're refreshing your body to continue activity. The only difference is that in the morning your body knows it needs to stretch and before a workout You know you need to stretch

we stretch because we want to apply gradual pressure on our limbs, muscles and our whole body before doing something really strenuous that would potentially hurt us if we don't stretch. also it helps improve muscular elasticity...
