I am going to attempt to get a piece of luggage repaired while in NYC next month. I don't know if this is too short of a distance for a taxi to want to take me and I really don't want to walk WITH it from the Marriott Marquis to W 32nd st. and 5th Ave and back, especially in February. I'm really not much a fan of walking in the cold too much because I'm from somewhere quite warm. Also, if you know exactly where I'm talking about, how busy are they at this repair center and how likely is it that they could repair (a missing wheel on a Samsonite bag) immediately?

You can take a cab cross the street...heck, with New York Cabs, they'll take you to Tokyo if they could! Just look for a yellow cab with the livery number lit up on top (i.e. : 6A32). Being that you are in the the Marriott Marquis, the doorman will hail you a cab so that's one thing you don't have to worry about. The fare should run you about $5 - $6.

Thinking that this is a New York repair shop, they probably have the wheel right there in shop and could do this in a matter of minutes.

Yes, the taxi will take you with the luggage, but usually you're charged an extra dollar or two for each piece of luggage. However, I would recommend just taking the subway or bus since it's only about 10 blocks. Getting a taxi in that area to go 10 blocks in the middle of the day will be very expensive - and there will be so much traffic. You can take the N, R or W from Times Square to 34th Street & 6th Avenue, and then walk one block to 5th.

Hello, I keep my email open and block nobody; even those that hassle or tell me off. I understand where you are coming from but then again many blockers here have a crybaby attitude that I disagree with what you say, wahhhh, I'm taking my marbles and going home! For example the last person who blocked me did so because I said that Cleopatra was not black Sub Saharan as she thought but Macedonian from the Ptomely family. I went on to point out that there was an Afro - Centrist prof who gave a big public lecture about Aristotle stealing all his ideas from the Black Africans who had it in the Library of Alexandria... not finished until well after his death. Before that a creationist blocked me for pointing out that God will ask how believed and behaved in this life; not ask if earth is 6400 or 4.5 billion years old or if man walked with dinosaurs. Cheers, Michael Kelly

A taxi will take you short distances (I tend to give a larger tip for the quicker trips). You pay an initial charge for the ride but mileage but NY taxis are still pretty cheap compared to the rest of the world.

You have to flag a cab down that has its light lit up (if the "off duty" light is also on, then the cab isn't available).

There's no problem with taking a cab any distance. For a short ride, consider giving the driver a larger tip (like a dollar) than the standard 15%.

Of course. A taxi would take you 10 feet if you wanted them to. Just remember they always a set fee of 2.50 or so regarless of how far you travel.
