A drain field with outlet lower than pool outlet a MUST to keep transient ground water from around pool, otherwise when you drain the pool, if there is high ground-water, your pool will float right out of the ground like a boat.

If you mean a once piece type fiberglass formed pool, the drain should be installed before the pool is installed for proper drainage.
