The best thing people in my community do is Habitat for Humanity. You have heard of it? It is an organization started by Jimmy Carter to build homes for the poor. It is very popular. Its like extreme home makeover home edition, but not so extreme.

Maybe you should try Volunteers of America. It's a National Non Profit faith-based organization. The website is really cool because you can search for opportunities by state.
Give it a shot you may open the door through acquaintances that may lead to something more. If not then try visiting churches in the area. I suggest a medium to large congregation because there are more options for choosing without the pressure of joining.
