I was wondering about extraction complications asides from dry socket?? I had a tooth extracted on Monday. It was somewhat difficult and required multiple shots of numbing medication and the tooth being sawed in half.

Three days later, I still have an egg shaped swollen area on my jawbone. It is "hard" and has been red/warm the past two days. I am going back to the oral surgeon this afternoon... but was hoping for some possibilities before then???

Thanks

The amount of anesthetic used is not indicative of what caused the symptoms you are experiencing now, only that you were experiencing what you perceived as pain and your doctor choose to anesthetize you with more or probably a different medication. The fact that it might have been a difficult extraction that required "sectioning the tooth"(some dentist do this anyway just for ease of removal) is an indication of why you are experiencing these symptoms such as the egg shaped swollen area, with redness and heat. If you are not experiencing any pain, then chances are you don't have an infection. But the reddish, heat and swollen area are a good indication that an infection may be present and building pressure, and about to display some more profound symptoms. Other symptoms that would make you realize an infection were present would be that of fever, soreness with tightness in the jaw and tissue, inflammation with drainage in the extraction site, bad taste in your mouth along with throbbing and pain. But to be perfectly honest, I can't tell you one way or another, only give you the common symptoms. All extractions cause some trauma and soreness, and take some time to recover from. This usually last a few days to a couple of weeks depending upon the severity of the procedure. It's hard to say, since no two people react the same way to the same situation. I hope I have given you the information needed to help you with your question. The best advise I can offer is to follow your OS advise and any questions you have, just ask him. Either he or one of the staff will be more than happy to answer any questions you have. Good luck!

You don't mention pain. Normally pain is associated with infection, so I'll take a shot in the dark and rule that out. Most likely what is going on is your jaw is still somewhat traumatized and swollen from the extraction. My jaw was sore and swollen for a couple of weeks after I had my wisdom teeth surgically extracted, similar symptoms, but no real complications such as infection or dry socket.

It could be a bruise from the difficult extraction/. Dry socket would be very painful.
