Self mutilation is bad. When you try to hurt yourself physically, it is normally because of something that is going on mentally. It is better to address the real issue than to take it out on yourself.

However, certain forms of self mutilation is permitted and acceptable to some subcultures. Most people, however, are not attracted by missing limbs or tongues that have been operated to look like a snake's tongue.

Well, temporarily I think cutting saved my life. When I didn't have anything else to save me from my own suicidal thoughts, it really DID help.

But now I've gotten over the initial feelings (to a certain degree) that led me to cut and I'm just left with this bad habit that I do simply out of ritual, and it's become more of an addiction than anything else. And now it's NOT good.

There are so many grey areas in life, it's hard to make everything black and white. Generally, cutting is not going to benefit anyone in the long-term; damage to the body equals damage to the mind. But, short-term, I think it is definitely better than some things people could be doing to themselves.

Keeping feeling bottled up is also looked as being always bad. There are adult S&M clubs where the endorphin rush gained by recieving pain can be experience and shared in a more controlled. Perhaps martial arts classes or body modification such as piercing or tatoos could be an alternative outlet?

Have you ever thought about the mental pain that person is going through that causes them to want to feel pain? Body mutilation leaves scars, emotionally and physically, for the person and the people around them. Good therapeutic value is going to see an actual therapist, not punishing the temple that your soul resides.

Self mutilation is good for you, like some one said to me. I feel I have a sense of control. It's some thing I can control, but it's bad for other people to see because they don't under stand and they think your attempting suicide. Which is far from the case.

Well, harm to self = Bad. (Psychological reason?).
Better to ask: Why do people do that?.
Ultimately, if people want to do themselves harm, they will.
If you think this can be used in therapy, then perhaps you should bring this up to a therapist and see their point of view on the matter. You'll see why this is a bad idea if you really see their perspective.

Self-mutilation is bad because it is a sickness. If you know someone who is practicing this you can help by recommending a psychiatric treatment. Religiously speaking, your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit hence you must love your body. If you are not religious try to be one. It is good for your soul!

The only problem is that self mutilation is a marker flag for so many serious mental problems which could be alleviated by treatment.

cutters might never even contemplate suicide, but many are on that path. it is not good, it might temporarily help the person deal but it is not a long term solution. besides the fact that they need counseling and possibly medication, which there is no shame in needing, they are setting themselves up to live with ugly scars and inviting deadly infections to attack them before the cuts heal.

I personally feel that it is wrong. But look and priests and other religious people. They whip themselves to surpress sexual feelings and to understand what jesus felt. They feel closer to God in a way. So who are we to tell someone what they can do. Maybe we don't feel that it is wrong so much as we don't understand why anyone would do it.
