Yeah it is!! Why and how could you give up a life that is dependent on you. If your kids hair falls out are you going to get rid of it? One of your kids has dry flaky skin that you keep finding on your furniture get rid of the kid.

However; you do need to decide if you love the dog unconditionally as he does you. If not find him a new home and don't ever attempt to care for another life until you know you are able to give unconditional love to that life.

There are steps you should explore before giving him up.

Brush him twice a weeks. There are special combs for getting the undercoat brushed out. These things can work miracle

A once a week bath can help (no more than that or he could get dry skin). There are shampoos that claim to reduce shedding

Check his food. Most commercial dog foods contain corn. Dogs can have an allergic reaction to it which causes them to shed like fiends. (We have a dog right now - who's supposed to be a nonshedding breed - and his hair just falls out if he eats a meal with corn). Switch him to a dog food that has no corn or cornmeal.

Take him to the vet. He may have an underlying skin condition

The following won't stop shedding, but they will make it easier to live with.

Vacuum at least once a week (I vacuum at least three times a week)
Keep sticky hair rollers next to every door for last-minute hair removal.
They make large sticky rollers (like paint rollers) for upholstery.

This dog is your responsibility. It is better to find him a new home than to leave him outside all day, but you made a commitment to this animal and all his foibles. You have a moral obligation to explore all avenues of possibility before this last resort.

I hope this helps.

If you can't properly care for and love the dog, then you should find it a new home. It is more responsible for you to find a good dog owner than to be a bad dog owner. I hope that makes sense :o).

But if you find him a new home, please don't get a new dog. Bassetts don't shed that much, compared to many other dogs. If you can't handle the shedding of a bassett, you can't handle the shedding of any dog.

I know how you feel... I have three basset hounds, and yes... they shed... but don't get rid of him until you try a few things first.. My dogs are 1 year old and for their entire lives we have put up with shedding.... finally I had to do something... They were on Purina One until I decided to switch them after the completely refused to eat it... so we switched to Nutro Small bites from petsmart... the shedding has cut down by at least half... also... brush him daily and use conditioner on his coat when you bath him... use either adult conditioner or baby conditioner... just be sure to find a gentle scented formula... Also... allow him to run around outside for at least a couple of hours a day this will allow any "dead" hair to fall of... and finally when you bathe him be sure an blow him dry or towel him dry.. this will also get off any "dead" hair... good luck and I pray this helps... don't get rid of your baby over a couple of hairs... you will regret it for the rest of your life because they are the sweetest dogs in the entire world...

Oh for crying out loud! Buy a Sisal Hound glove or rubber curry brush and run it over him once a day. Big deal, it takes 60 seconds a day.

Dogs shed.

My coonhound sheds twice a year. It's not forever, so I put up with it. I just need to clean the house a bit more frequently during shedding time. My buddy is worth every hair I have to pick up.

Um...you weren't aware that dogs shed before you got one? personally, i wouldn't get rid of a member of my family because they cause me to need to run the vacuum a little more frequently. then again some people are just heartless and selfish, with no regard for the fact that dogs are living creatures. if this is really a question for you, maybe the dog would be better off with someone who actually cared for him.

That's a bad reason. I would suggest taking 5 minutes out of your day to brush him. Shedding can also be due to lack of a proper diet. Ask your vet.

Yes, it is terrible, especially since there are numerous products on the market to help with shedding. Check out Petsmart for tablets and shampoo.
