I've had cats all my life and they've done some strange things but eating carpet is a new one on me.

You really need to stop this behavior as soon as possible.
If the cat ingests to much of the carpet it's possible that the cat may develop a blockage in his/her intestines or bowel and that would be an emergency situation requiring surgery.

When you see the cat eating the carpet, clap your hands and say NO very loudly and firmly.

Also just to be on the safe side if it were me I'd make an appointment with the Vet to discuss this behavior and perhaps he could x-ray the cat to make sure that a blockage isn't already forming.

Good luck
