I've brushed regularly, used mouthwash and I can't seem to get rid of the taste. I've smoked for years, but the taste just started occuring a few weeks ago. It tastes slighty 'metal-like'.

You may have a fungal infection. See your dentist for an evaluation. Is your mouth tissue sore or do you have white patches anywhere on the lining of your mouth (or female areas if you are female?)
Are you taking chemo or radiation therapy? This is a side effect of each of these as well.

if you are tasting metal that usually means blood is present somewhere. The iron in blood is what makes the metallic taste.

You may have a sinus infection. Also, you could buy a tongue scraper to clean your tongue, which could eliminate the taste.
