I think a better idea is to have "Election Week" or "Election Month."
While I've never had any trouble getting to the polls on Election Day, some people might be more motivated (or at least have fewer excuses) if we had more time to vote.
A federal holiday might work, but as a previous poster noted, a lot of people might simply use it as another excuse to leave town, get drunk, etc.
But I'm up for anything that gets people out to the polls.

actually no longer! The polls are open 12 to 13 hours an afternoon. Are we to close down all corporation and lose what proportion tax money and sales, purely considering the fact which you have an excuse to no longer make it to the polls. I even have been unfavourable, I even have been decrease, then center type. I even have constantly been a single determine. I even have constantly made it to the polls. it is federal, state, and each community election. till you're working 12-13 hours an afternoon, it particularly is an excuse.

Voting is a civic duty and it shouldn't be rewarded by allowing people to sleep in. Besides, in Canada at least, it is mandated by legislation that you have to be given at least 4 hours to get to the polls. Polls are open between 08 - 20 so if you usually work a 9-5 day your employer has to let you leave early to vote. That's at least a small break isn't it?

I think this is a great idea. Since elections are on Tuesdays, I don't think we would have to worry about people going out of town. It is difficult for people who commute a long way to work to leave in the middle of their day to vote, so this would solve those problems.
Why shouldn't we celebrate our freedom to vote?

There is nothing more important that the average citizen can do than vote. We have to at least make it easy for them to do it - so they can't say "I couldn't go, I had to work."
