Does any one know how a hand dynamometer works?

wondering when you pull the metal bar is it just attached to a torque meter or would it be possible to make one incorporating strain gauges into the design?

Your idea re strain gauges would probably work if you could calibrate the force necessary to operate the instrument. Hand dynamometers usually work by a spring (actual or hydraulic) being compressed and a reading obtained.
