Our German Sheperd just had puppies yesterday. Is it normal for her to not want to go outside? She hasn't ate or drank anything, or used the bathroom. We aren't even able to clean up the whelping area, as of yet. I don't want to force her if at all possible, but I know she needs a break.

Ive had them go both ways. Some want to move on and others won't leave the babies. No need to push her I would leave it if she doesn't want to move for you to clean up. I figure when mom is done she goes out to go potty and that's when I clean up.

I usually don't get a preganant dog till its ready to give birth and I figure they may not be as comfortable to move away from babies. Other new dogs and critters around. Just like human women each pregnancy can be different. No need to push her unless you are going to have to leave her to go to work.

As for eating. She may not eat for a couple of days but after the babies and her are all settled be sure to have the 50lb bag ready for her. Remember she is trying to feed lots of babies.

I'm not a vet - but several of my friends have had dogs with puppies in the past few years and all have followed the same trend -- they don't do much but watch over the pups -- Eventually she will. It took about 3 weeks for one dog. If it gets too bad though, call your vet.

Yes, it is normal especially if this is her first litter of pups. We raised lab pups for years and our female dog was a great mother. Right after she had the pups, she would stay right there with them and nurse them. She did not want to leave them.

As long as she is eating and drinking, she should be fine.

It's normal - she's being a great mom! Don't worry - you'll be able to coax her out for very short periods of time soon. Make sure she has food and water where she can reach it and she'll go out when she absolutely has to.

She is being a good mother, but she has to go out, put a lead on her and take her out.
