When I got to that part of raising children they started asking questions.. that wasn't the only one, so I just said.... God made it that way. Why do butterfly's fly?? Cause God made them that way.
Why do grasshoppers have wings but they hop not fly? Cause God made them that way.
Where do babies come from? From God..
How does that work? You have to have a Mommy and a Daddy, God finds you a husband/wife, and then you get a baby. When God is ready to give you one. At 5 they don't need gory details, but don't lie to them either. Stories about the stork and cabbage leaves are BS and kids can smell BS from a mile away. If they think you are lying they will just ask their friends at school. AND telling them you get pregnant from kissing a boy is NOT a lie you want to start. When does the lying stop? As they get older you can get more graphic.
My 13 yr old knows pretty darn clearly where babies come from. She knows you gotta have sex to get pregnant. So does my 9 yr old. They have both watched the special on PBS about pregnancy. From Conception to Birth. Not sex though. It is great.

I was read "Where Do I Come From" by Peter Mayle. It's a great book and really keeps things simple but honest. I find a book often aids the conversation so it's not just a lecture but an experience. I highly recommend it!
If you choose not to go with the book--remember keep it simple and fun! Don't make it a scary thing to talk about. At the same time you need to make it a private thing to talk about. Best of Luck!

You need to tell them the complete and total truth. If a child has asked you, they're ready to know.
I actually read a book called "It's So Amazing!" It was really REALLY helpful and extremely easy to read with lots of pictures and comics. It also explains the difference between boys and girls. But not only that...it talks about things like adoption too. It goes into different families, like ones with single parents, grandparents, or homosexuals. It talks about HIV/AIDS and people with them. It talks about "Okay Touches" and "Not Okay Touches" when dealing with people besides family and doctors. Finally, it talks about a baby's development from conception to birth (which it talks about ALSO - Vaginal and Cesarean) and what it is a baby is doing. There's probably more, but I haven't read it in a while.
