An international driver's license or a driver's license from your home country is good for use in the New York State for a period of only 30 days from your arrival. You have to get a New York State driver's license if you are going to stay longer than that and drive as well.

You can only use an international driver's license if you are visiting and renting a car. Otherwise, if you live here you must get a NY drivers license.

You can use it as long as it, and your original drivers license, haven't expired. You cannot use an international drivers license without a regular license.

If you are planing to be in US only for a short while I think you can use the Int driving license in the states for a year, but you must have your passport with you while you are driving just in case if the police pull you over, they will ask for driving license and passport.

Please don't try to drive in the New York City metro area if you are not from here. The traffic situation is very bad, the signs are confusing, and the local drivers are very agressive.
