Are you keeping your hair and scalp moisturized? There are tons of products that you can use (Luster's light pink moisturizer, hot 6 oil, pantene prov relaxed and natural moisturizer) or just get a can of oil sheen. Our hair needs moisture something serious! Also make sure the shampoos and conditioners that you are using are made for black hair (or colored treated hair), "regular" products can strip black hair of its moisture.

I'm black too. Well, when I would wash my hair every other day, it grew from above the shoulder to mid-back length in roughly 2 years. Dirty hair grows too but it's psychological for me. I feel dirty if my hair is dirty. I mean, my hair grew when it was dirty growing up because my mom would only wash it 1x a month. However, I was young, she kept it in two braids every day, my genetics were at full force, and I had a good diet, so my hair was unusually abundant, as in past my butt and natural (no chemicals). I still think clean hair grows well too and I think you should keep it nice, clean, and healthy, which is why I recommend a wash every other day or every 3-4 days. Maybe use dry shampoo on roots on non-wash days just to spruce it a bit. When you wash, air dry it as much as possible or use a bonnet dryer (low temp) to remove as much water. the straighten it. If you use protective products, your hair should be fine and look very healthy and alive.

I'd do a cholesterol treatment just on my scalp. I'm not black, but I went to Hairdressing school and did this on an African girl.
