Global warming means the average temperature of the earth will increase, however this is only by 2 or 3 degrees. This small change in temperature is enough to really throw off weather cycles. In some cases global warming will actually cause some parts of the world to experience colder weather.

It could easily be both. There are bears coming out of hibernation in Russia because it's so warm they think its spring. Usually Moscow is -20C this time of year and several feet deep in snow but at present it's about +6C and snow-free. There are migratory birds in the UK that haven't flown south this winter because it's so warm that the insects they eat survive the winter.

Basically one of the effects of "global warming" is to put more energy into the weather system - this means that we can expect more extreme events - that means hot and cold, as well as floods, storms, hurricanes etc etc.
