Would I better off saving my money and getting a Sunbeam or similar?

Viking and Kitchenaid are both excellent stand mixers. At home I have a Kitchenaid that my mother has had since before I was born (20+ years) and we've abused and used that thing in ways I can't describe. It's made countless batches of cookies, cheesecakes, quick breads, muffins, cup cakes, yeast breads, pie doughs, pumkin pie fillings - anything and everything and it's still running like a champ.
My culinary school recently purchased a fleet of Viking stand mixers for use in the baking classes, and they seem to be alright. I don't like the model we have, though, the tilt mechanism isn't intuitive and the bowl just doesn't sit right in the machine.
Kitchenaid products and replacement parts are readily available and their customer service (in my experience) is second to none, Viking on the other hand is just starting to really get into the consumer grade mixers and their accessories and services are a bit harder to come by. Additionally, I believe the Viking costs most than Kitchenaid, if that is significant. And if this is important to you at all, Kitchenaids come in a zillion different colors. :D

Well, for a simple hand-held mixer, the Sunbeams and less expensive ones work fine. Most brands are pretty comparable nowadays. But, you are kind of limited with the hand mixers.
If you want a bigger stand mixer, though, I'm partial to the Kitchen Aid, they seem to last forever and have tons of attachments and accessories that you can use. I have the Professional 6 Series Kitchen Aid that I use all the time, and the pasta maker attachement; and it always works great. They can get rather pricey, but you can get a good deal at a warehouse store (like Costco or BJs) or even at Kohls. (I bought mine at Costco for almost half-price).

I have a large Sunbeam standup mixer that is heavy duty and really does the job. It came with the regular beater, paddle and hook. My daughter has the large Kitchenaid and she paid much more for hers than I did mine and my Sunbeam does the same job.

I have a Kitchen Aid and wouldn't trade it for nothing! Pricey? Yes but worth every cent. Plus if you really surf the web you will find some awesome deals. I bought mine for about $110 less than what most stores were selling it for. I have a Professional 6 Series.

I have a Kitchen Aid. It is one of the best things I have ever spent $$ on. I also have a couple of the accessory items. I can make and stuff sausage and I can slice cabbage, I can knead bread, and I can whip cream. I'd go for the Kitchen Aid.

You get what you pay for. I got a cheap one and it only lasted 2 years. Go with the Kitchen Aid! I inherited my grandmothers and it still works!

I love my Kitchen Aid. It is easy to use and easy to clean. I can't live without it! I have had it for 12 years and it is still going strong. It was money well spent.

If you cook alot, go with the Kitchenaid. I got a knockoff stand mixer a few years ago and I think I finally killed it.
